The Cabinet has decided to immediately and unilaterally withdraw the Maldives from the New7Wonders of Nature contest. The Cabinet on April 24 discussed a paper presented by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture proposing the Maldives’ withdrawal from the contest.
The Cabinet made the final decision today after deliberating on the recommendations of the cabinet subcommittee that was convened to further investigate the matter.
In deciding to withdraw the Maldives from the New7Wonders contest, the Cabinet rejected the organiser’s demand for expensive license fees and sponsorship packages, not included in the initial agreement of participation, in order to compete in the remainder of the competition. They noted the irregularities and lack of transparency in calculating competitor rankings at different stages of the competition.
Ministry of Tourism, in its paper presented to the Cabinet on the matter, highlighted the concerns of the tourism industry leaders and other stakeholders over the nature of the competition.
